Windows 7 RC1 Display Drivers for Dell Inspiron 1150
by Abhishek
If you are still using Dell Inspiron 1150 which is having unsupported chipset for Windows 7 you must have faced display drivers issue. When you install Windows 7 beta or Windows 7 RC1 it will take you back to 1990s in terms of screen resolution.
Here is the solution:
1) Download the drivers from this link.
2) Restart the laptop in safe mode
3) Unrar the drivers in a folder
4) Install the drivers using Device Manager (Shortcut: Windows Key + Break -> Device Manager)
5) Restart
And you are done!
You are back to your old 1024×768 resolution.
Special thanks to my friend and colleague Kuntal for helping me find this.
YESSS!!!! Nice….. Thanks…
I followed the steps for video resolution. I have 1024×768 but only 256 colors. Did I do something wrong. Dell Inspiron with Intel Graphis and P4 2.88Ghz.I am going to try uninstall and re install again. I will let you know if that works.Thank YouBill
It installed with no issues in safemode (other than a warning about compatability) but when I boot back into normal mode I still do not have the ability to change the resolution
Hi Joshua, it seems you did the right thing and it should work. Try again and even if that does not work try it with a clean install.
NOTE: If you’re having problems like I was, it’s probably in the way you’re updating the driver in the device manager. It only worked a certain way for me and I tried several ways.I believe the way I tried was by right clicking on the VGA Adapter it had in there, selecting update the driver, and then going “Browse my computer for driver software”. Then (the important part), I picked “Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer”, as opposed to the browse button above it. From there, I navigated to the drivers folder from the RAR file above.I hope this helps someone as I got very frustrated.
Thanks Bobby… If you let it install by itself it will install a new video card and you will have the original standard vga in addition to to the correct driver and the system defaults to the standard vga. After selecting the standard vga according to Bobby’s comments its worked great!!Thanks again!
hey guys ive tryed everything you guys have listed above for my dell inspiron 1150 and nothing is working, no matter what i do i cant change the resolution. Please help me out here cause i really dont have the money to buy a new laptop. thanks-bob-
hey bobby are you trying with the production version of the windows 7 now? or still using the Beta? I have a feeling that it may work properly in recently launched production version of windows 7.
Tried it out on the RC 32-bit 7100 build and it took a couple of tries before it went through. Windows 7 at first disabled it, so I deleted it, went back into safe mode and tried again. Did need winzip to unrar the file as it gave me a dumb look the first time I double clicked the file. Whoever put this together gets a drink on me for sure. I was looking at a looong rollback to XP, plus I was going to up the RAM and would have wasted my money if I didn’t get this worked out.Dell should be updating these drivers anyway. Even with 512 MB of RAM Win 7 still installed and seems to operate somewhat normally. I’m sure now that I’m safe to bump the RAM to a gig this will work just fine and I can slap a regular version of 7 down the road.Good luck and thanks again.
Hey Greg,Where are you from? I would love to have a drink with you :)Thanks,Abhishek
Hmm.. I can get the Driver loaded… but Win7 stops it due “to a problem” and I get a Code 43. I am running Win7 Pro.
this driver will not work for me with the Microsoft Trial of Win 7 Enterprise. It worked with the RTM 7600 version but not the official release. Seems to me the systems should be the same. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hello William, Yes I have tested it for only one version so it may not work for all. I am no longer working on Windows 7, I am on Mac now 😉 so would not be able to help you on this. Hopefully some readers of this article may come up with a solution.
okie.. yeah its a bit aggravating that I cannot get this working.
thank a lot man
I’m having the same probs. Tried installing this driver with this technique, but with no
Well I hate to say it, but I’m going back to Vista. This sucks but what else do I do.
tryin to get win7 ultimate build 7600 going on my old inspiron 1150 laptop to give to my mum but havin same prob, tried everything mentioned here but get ‘Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)’ cant choose res, just greyed out. stuck on 640×480 can manage to get it to 1024×768 256 in advanced/list all modes, but 256 is no good for anyone. gonna keep searching for other drivers. will report back if any luck.

Yeah, I wasn’t bothered about the Aero thing. The screen display is just fine now and Win7 works surprisingly well on that old machine, I did upgrade to 1GB RAM but that was all…luvverly job! Thanks again!
Fantastic! Thanks.
Hello thanks so much for the advise it took me 2days to figue this out. Dell is not not help at all like some one said they should have made the 1150 to were they could update as well because if your Inspiron 1150 hasn’t given you any problem why buy another on..Again thank you for the advise.Fantistic!! dell 1150 VGA card driver.com
hi
dell 1150 VGA card driver.com
yes
yes!
I do all step by step but i am facing the same problem helpp!!!!! 🙁
You rock for keeping that posted – Thanks! I updated the driver from “unknown PCI video” and it rebooted with an added “Standard VGA” but updating the driver for *that* did the trick. Useable Win7 machine now.
Abhishek Desai- Thank you for keeping (and creating) this post. I have an 1150 that I upgraded to Win7 about two years ago (also put in 1GB RAM and a 120GB hard drive. I managed to get the graphics to recognize another dell/intel driver at that time through trial and error, but recently messed that up! Your install and instructions worked first time!
Yayyy!!! It worked! Thanks!
This worked well for me. Thank you Abishek. I used 7Zip to unzip the .rar file to my thumb drive. It looks like the driver works better in Windows 7 than in XP or Vista. There is a way to disable the windows protection function by a command line, but this is much simpler. It seems that the function is not loaded in Safe Mode. By the way, for the uninitiates, Safe Mode is entered into by holding the F8 key while the computer is booting up. that will signal the computer to open a page with the various boot options. Just choose the Safe Mode option.
P.S. Windows 7 works well on this machine with 1MB of ram and a 2.8GHz processor even with Symantec antivirus running. I upped the virtual memory to 1000MB start and 4000MB max. [Control Panel-System-Performance-Advanced-Virtual Memory-Custom]. The HD had 250GB so HD space is not a problem. Upping the HD really improved the speed of the machine. It is used as an office tool. The display had to be replaced a year ago.
Thank you for that clean solution. It took an additional step as indicated by the comment from Bobby (capital B). Had to force Windows to take driver but worked great.
It worked,,,Thanks
Please help me ditch the damn “SOUND/NO AUDIO OUTPUT DEVICE IS INSTALLED” problem too. It’s Dell Insp. 1150
At first, I thought this didn’t work, but when I went to device manager, I found that the driver had installed on the external monitor section. I simply clicked on the remaining section & had to update from the driver list. It would not update from the file that installed the first section. I had to go to the installed driver as file to update from. Still working after all these years!!!!
